To assess an author's position on tolerance, it is important to closely read the essay and identify any explicit statements or arguments that the author makes about the topic.
These statements may appear in the introduction, body paragraphs, or conclusion of the essay. Additionally, the author's tone, word choice, and use of rhetorical devices may also give clues about their position on tolerance. After identifying any explicit statements or arguments made by the author, it is important to analyze them in context and consider any relevant background information about the author and the historical or cultural context in which the essay was written. This can help to provide a deeper understanding of the author's perspective and how it may have been influenced by external factors.
Based on this analysis, one can then form an opinion about Forster's position on tolerance. It is important to support any claims with specific evidence from the essay and to acknowledge any potential limitations or ambiguities in the author's position.

TEXT: The first effect of the creation of the 13 colonies was that Britain grew very rich. Each colony now had productive farms and new towns growing as trading posts. Britain profited from these by taxation. Everything grown, bought or sold in the American Colonies was somehow taxed by Britain.
Another effect was the British Colonies became destinations for thousands of immigrants from England and elsewhere in Europe. Wealthy Europeans were eager to claim new land for plantations or make fortunes from trade in the new cities. Middle-class European farmers hoped they could get new farmland of their own. Many poor English and Scots-Irish settlers hoped they could find better lives in America working as indentured servants and hopefully purchasing land of their own someday.
Every new English colony was a new disaster for the Native Americans. The forests they hunted were cut down to make way for farms and plantations. More and more tribes became pushed off their land, either being cheated by false negotiations, or forced out with violence. When tribes fought back, the English settlers would retaliate harshly with gunfire and arson, burning entire villages to the ground. Worse still was the invisible killer that British settlers brought with them: diseases like smallpox and plague, which spread among native tribes quickly and for which they had no immunity or treatments. Sometimes, colonists would give infected blankets to natives to spread diseases on purpose. Ultimately for the native tribes, the effects of British settlement in America were tragic and irreversible. By the mid 1700s, most tribes had nearly vanished from the Atlantic coast.
The final effect of the British Colonies was the introduction of slavery to North America. The first kidnapped Africans in the American Colonies were brought to Jamestown as slaves to work in the new tobacco plantations. Slavery would spread throughout the new colonies, with cities as far north as New York being used as trading posts for slave auctions. Mainly however, slavery was much more concentrated in the southern colonies, which had large tobacco and rice plantations requiring many laborers. In the Southern Colonies, African people were simply considered property. Laws in Maryland only referred to Africans in terms of planters’ property rights. A Virginia law in 1642 punished people for hiding runaway slaves or indentured servants. Free blacks were eventually permitted to live and own property in northern colonies, and slavery in the north slowly became outlawed. In the south, however, the plantation economies of the colonies depended almost completely on slave labor.

how did the climate influence the arrival of the first humans in the americas?
Answer:
Climate explains a higher proportion of extinction rates . This shift in R2 indicates that the ability to disentangle the relative influence of climate vs. humans is highly sensitive to selection of human arrival dates, rather than robust to dating uncertainty as Prescott report, even at the coarse temporal resolution used. This sensitivity is likely a result of close synchrony between human arrivals and megafaunal extinctions, so that modeling extinction peaks with less plausible arrival scenarios results in detection of a larger climatic influence . This effect is increasingly evident when multiple less plausible scenarios are simultaneously considered, yielding climate as by far the strongest predictor of global extinction rates.

36a) Name and explain one critique on the normativist notion of disease.[2] b)11. Name and explain one critique on the naturalist notion of disease[2] (answer according to mark allocations 1-name,1-short explanation=2
a) Critique on the normativist notion of disease: It relies on subjective societal judgments, leading to arbitrary classifications of what constitutes a disease.
b) Critique on the naturalist notion of disease: It overlooks the influence of social, cultural, and psychological factors on health and focuses solely on biological markers.
a) Critique on the normativist notion of disease:
The critique is that the normativist notion of disease relies heavily on societal values and judgments, which can lead to subjective and arbitrary classifications of what is considered a disease. This approach overlooks the complexity and diversity of human experiences and medical conditions.
The normativist notion of disease defines disease based on societal norms and expectations of health. It assumes that there is an objective standard of health that individuals should conform to.
One critique of this notion is that it tends to impose narrow and rigid definitions of disease that may not align with the lived experiences and individual perspectives of patients.
For example, certain conditions or traits that deviate from the societal norm, such as variations in sexual orientation or gender identity, have historically been pathologized as diseases. However, many argue that these variations are natural and not indicative of illness or disorder.
The critique is that by relying on normative standards, the normativist notion of disease can stigmatize and marginalize individuals whose experiences or conditions do not fit into the societal expectations of health.
b) Critique on the naturalist notion of disease:
The critique is that the naturalist notion of disease relies solely on biological or physiological factors, neglecting important social, cultural, and psychological influences on health and illness. It oversimplifies the complex interplay between biology and social context in determining disease.
The naturalist notion of disease defines disease solely in terms of biological or physiological abnormalities or dysfunctions within the body. It focuses on objective markers such as pathology, cellular changes, or biochemical imbalances.
For instance, socio-economic disparities, environmental factors, lifestyle choices, access to healthcare, and cultural beliefs can all contribute to the occurrence and progression of diseases. Ignoring these contextual factors limits the understanding of disease and hampers efforts to address health disparities and promote holistic well-being.
The critique is that the naturalist notion of disease can lead to reductionism by oversimplifying the complex interplay between biology and social context. It neglects the importance of considering the broader socio-cultural and psychological influences that shape health outcomes and disease experiences.
To have a comprehensive understanding of disease, a more integrative and multidimensional approach is needed that considers both biological and contextual factors.

discuss the general model of vulnerability and the convergence of predisposing, enabling, and need characteristics at the individual and ecological levels. give an example.
The general model of vulnerability is a theoretical framework used to understand the various factors that contribute to an individual's vulnerability to negative health outcomes. This model suggests that vulnerability arises from the convergence of predisposing, enabling, and need characteristics at both the individual and ecological levels.
Predisposing characteristics refer to an individual's inherent traits and factors such as genetics, age, gender, and ethnicity that increase their vulnerability. Enabling characteristics are environmental factors such as access to healthcare, social support, and economic resources that either promote or hinder an individual's ability to protect themselves from health risks. Need characteristics are factors that indicate an individual's level of need for healthcare such as chronic illnesses, disabilities, and mental health disorders. The convergence of these characteristics at the individual and ecological levels can lead to increased vulnerability. For example, a low-income elderly person living in a neighborhood with limited access to healthcare and social support may have predisposing characteristics such as age and chronic illness, enabling characteristics such as lack of access to transportation, and need characteristics such as multiple chronic conditions. This convergence of factors increases their vulnerability to negative health outcomes.
Enabling characteristics refer to resources and factors that facilitate or hinder an individual's or population's ability to cope with or adapt to vulnerabilities. These include socioeconomic factors, such as income, education, and employment, as well as access to health care, social support, and community resources. Predisposing characteristics are factors that influence an individual's or population's inherent vulnerability. These may include demographic factors, such as age, gender, race, or ethnicity, and psychosocial factors, such as knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes. Need characteristics involve the actual or perceived needs for services or assistance in dealing with vulnerabilities. These needs can be influenced by the severity of the vulnerability, the availability and accessibility of services, and the ability to recognize and act on those needs.

When some students get an "F" as a grade, they interpret that letter as a message: "You are a failure." That interpretation is not accurate. Getting an "F' means only that you failed a test or an assignment- not that you failed your life.
From now on, experiment with a new way of thinking. Imagine that the letter F when used as a grade represents the word feedback. An "F" is an indication that you didn't understand the material well enough. It's an invitation to do something new to increase your skills and knowledge.
Within 24 hours after a graded test is returned to you (no matter what the grade), spend at least five minutes reviewing it. Then answer the following questions.
1. On what material did the teacher base test questions- readings, lectures, discussions, or other class activities?
2. What types of questions appeared in the test-objective (such as matching items, true/false questions, or multiple choice), short-answer, or essay? Did you miss certain types of questions more than others? If so, which types?
3 How well did you prepare for the test? When studying, did you focus your
attention and avoid distractions-or did you end up multitasking? Also, how
many classes did you attend, and how many of the assigned readings did you complete?
4. Now look for clues for new study strategies. Do your notes from class and on
assigned readings contain answers to the questions that you missed? If not,
then how can you read or take notes differently to capture the content that
you've been missing? (Note: This can be a useful question to ask your
instructors.) For example, instead of simply skimming your notes, you could
rewrite them to be more organized and complete. Instead of glancing over the
passages of a textbook that you highlighted, you could write answers to the
review questions at the end of each chapter.
5 Can you learn anything from the instructor's comments on this test that will help you prepare for the next test?
6. Can you now correctly answer the questions that you missed?
7. After answering the above questions, write an Intention Statement about avoiding test-taking errors in the future.
I intend to.
I will focus my attention and avoid distractions when studying by setting a specific time and place to do so, attending all classes, and completing all assigned readings.
What is attention?Attention is the ability to focus on a specific thought or task while blocking out irrelevant information. It is a cognitive process that involves the selection of relevant information from the environment, and is a fundamental component of higher-order functioning. Attention can be divided into two categories: selective and divided. Selective attention involves focusing on one particular stimulus in a crowded environment, while divided attention involves the simultaneous processing of multiple stimuli.
I will focus my attention and avoid distractions when studying by setting a specific time and place to do so, attending all classes, and completing all assigned readings. I will actively engage with the material by taking detailed notes and seeking out opportunities to ask my instructors questions. I will review my notes and re-read passages from my textbook before tests to help me better understand the material. I will also seek out resources such as online tutorials or study groups to help me better understand the material.
