n H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, the central idea is the concept of entropy and its impact on the fate of civilizations. The protagonist travels through time and witnesses the decline of human society into two separate species, the Eloi and the Morlocks. The author uses foreshadowing as a literary technique to develop this central idea.
Throughout the text, there are several instances of foreshadowing that suggest the eventual downfall of human society. For example, the Time Traveller observes that the buildings in the future are "rotting away," and that the air is filled with a "haze of dust and smoke." This creates a sense of decay and entropy that is present throughout the novel. Furthermore, the Time Traveller's initial meeting with the Eloi suggests a lack of curiosity and an inability to survive without technology, which hints at a society that has lost its ability to adapt and evolve.
By using foreshadowing, Wells is able to develop the central idea that entropy and decay are inevitable forces that will eventually lead to the downfall of human society. The decay of the buildings and the air is a visual representation of this idea, while the Eloi's lack of curiosity and inability to survive without technology represent the societal decay that is occurring. Ultimately, the use of foreshadowing is an effective way for Wells to convey this central idea to the reader and to create a sense of inevitability about the decline of human society.

As James Jarvis sits in his son's house realizing how little he knew of him, he notices four paintings on the wall. Consider what relevance each of these paintings had to Arthur Jarvis' life. (Feel free to look up Vergelegen.)
The four paintings in Arthur Jarvis' house represent his passion for South African history, social justice, and Vergelegen estate.
These artworks symbolize Arthur's connection to his country and his commitment to making a positive impact on society.
Arthur Jarvis was deeply interested in South African history and the struggle for social justice. Each of the four paintings in his house serves as a representation of these passions. One painting may depict Vergelegen, a historic Cape Dutch estate known for its stunning architecture and rich history.
This estate could symbolize Arthur's appreciation for South African heritage and the complex dynamics between colonizers and native peoples. Other paintings might represent key figures or events in the country's history, illustrating Arthur's understanding of the socio-political context and his drive to address societal issues.
By displaying these paintings, Arthur created a space where his personal values and interests were reflected, inspiring him to work towards a more equitable society. The fact that James Jarvis, his father, is unaware of their significance shows the gap in understanding between them and highlights Arthur's distinct values and convictions.

a.Direct eye contact and smiles.
b.Carefully spoken words and phrasesc.
c.Higher pitch, vocal tension, and longer pausess
d.Relaxed posture and carefully controlled physical movementse.
e.All of the above
Answer: The correct answer is:
c. Higher pitch, vocal tension, and longer pauses
Explanation:
Leakage cues are unintentional nonverbal behaviors that can reveal deceptive communication. These cues are often subconscious and can occur alongside intentional verbal communication. One example of a leakage cue is when a person's voice becomes higher in pitch, exhibits vocal tension, or experiences longer pauses while attempting to deceive. These nonverbal behaviors can indicate internal stress or anxiety associated with dishonesty and can be indicative of potential deception.
Options a, b, and d do not describe leakage cues. Direct eye contact and smiles (option a) and relaxed posture and carefully controlled physical movements (option d) can be intentional behaviors used to convey trustworthiness or confidence, but they are not necessarily leakage cues. Carefully spoken words and phrases (option b) can also be intentional and do not necessarily indicate deception.

What is the meaning of this excerpt
Answer:
It means that the walk from the prison-door to the marketplace seems trecherous and long to Hester Prynne.

FILL IN THE BLANK. In order to create appropriate classes, ______ are used to describe the classes. nouns. pronouns. verbs. implementations.
In order to create appropriate classes, nouns are used to describe the classes. Nouns are words that represent a person, place, thing, or idea, and in object-oriented programming. Thus, the correct option is A.
For example, if you were creating a class for a car, you might use the nouns "make," "model," and "colour" to describe the attributes of the car. Pronouns, on the other hand, are not typically used to describe classes in object-oriented programming.
Pronouns are words that take the place of a noun, such as "he," "she," or "it," and they do not have the specificity needed to describe the attributes and behaviours of objects.
Verbs can also be used in object-oriented programming to describe the behaviour of objects. For example, if you were creating a class for a car, you might use the verb "drive" to describe the behaviour of the car.
Implementations are not used to describe classes, but rather to describe the specific implementation of a class or object. Implementations can include the code that defines the behaviour and attributes of the class or object, as well as any supporting code or libraries.
In summary, nouns are typically used to describe classes in object-oriented programming, while pronouns are not specific enough. Verbs can also be used to describe object behaviour, while implementations describe the specific code that defines the class or object. Thus, the correct option is A.

THE MATCH
There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.
Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.
In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished.

"Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted" by Malcolm Gladwell
What does Gladwell explain "strong-tie" phenomena in relation to past and current activism?
How does Shirky’s example of the Sidekick correlate to the point Gladwell is trying to make?
Is Gladwell completely disproving the idea that strong-ties cannot be created through social media?
Do you agree that social media makes it harder for an activist’s expression to have an impact? Why or why not?
Why did Gladwell not consider Sameer Bhatia’s story a story of activism?
In his essay “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted,” Malcolm Gladwell claims that strong-ties, deep and meaningful connections between individuals, are necessary for effective activism.
He uses the example of Sidney Tarrow’s civil rights movement and the prominence of women’s suffrage as evidence that in-person connections are more stimulating and important than technological ones. Clay Shirky’s example of the Sidekick can also be used to emphasize Gladwell’s point that technological revolutions are not as successful as personal ones.
Shirky gives an example of how the Sidekick’s users wrote letters and organized rallies when the gadget was having issue, rather than exclusively using online platforms as a method to voice their discontent. Gladwell thus argues that creating a robust strong-tie network is challenging through social media, since it does not require the same level of sustained engagement as offline activism.
Considering this, it does appear that social media might not be the most effective tool for activist expression to have an impact. With limited messages and attention spans online, activists may be unable to construct the type of ties they need to enact social change.

Which of the following best explains why the writer describes his son as "a
typical Indian kid"?
OA. To describe what his son looks like
OB. To demonstrate he understands the teacher's perspective
OC. To give a general description of all Indian kids
OD. To show how different his son is from other students
SUBMIT
The writer describes his son as an "atypical Indian kid" to demonstrate he understands the teacher's perspective. Option OB is the correct answer.
The author of the story "The Accidental Asian" Eric Liu describes his son as an atypical Indian kid. This is because his son is different from the traditional Indian children who usually excel in academics. His son is not academically talented, and his grades were not good when he first started school. This made the teacher suggest to the father that his son was suffering from a learning disorder.
The author goes on to explain that his son was not suffering from a learning disorder but rather the way he thought was different. The son of the author was an atypical Indian kid because he did not fit into the mold of the traditional Indian kid. Liu explained that his son had talents that the traditional Indian kid did not have, such as his creativity and his musical ability.
Therefore, the author describes his son as an atypical Indian kid to demonstrate that he understands the teacher's perspective. The author is well aware of the stereotype that surrounds Indian kids, and he knows that many Indian children excel in academics. His son did not fit this stereotype and was, therefore, an atypical Indian kid. The author wanted to emphasize that his son's atypicality did not mean that he was not gifted or talented. Rather, he was gifted in ways that were not traditionally valued in Indian culture.
Therefore the correct answer is option OB.

SUMMARY
The article discusses the way in which scientist are beginning to reexamine the link between gene mutations and inheritable disease. The article cites a study that found that humans have an average of over 50 gene mutations, but most are not harmful. The article discusses a specific genetic variant that was linked to kidney failure until a doctor, who had a patient with this mutation and kidney issues, discovered that he had previously come across several people in a study that had the same genetic variance but did not present with kidney issues. This has caused researchers to question their previous methods for linking genetic variations and diseases and caused many to call for more research and the development of new methods of identifying and linking these variations in human genome and resulting medical issues.
REFLECTION
This article is interesting and a little scary. When we go to the doctor, we all just assume that the science is infallible, and the doctors know what they are doing. Stories like this remind us just how much we have yet to understand about the human body. With 20,000-25,000 genes, its surprising that scientist could even sequence DNA, let alone find specific variants. Collecting more information on the human genome will give scientist valuable insight into hereditary diseases but concluding inaccurate findings could prove disastrous. It would be interesting if this research could tell us the exact roll that different environmental conditions play in human development and the prevalence of different issues as well. By understanding and controlling for genetic variants, the long-term effects that environment has on humans’ health and behavior should become clearer. The most terrifying idea that I can’t help but think about is that of CRISPR. As we go though this chapter and especially reading this article, I can’t help but think how close it feels to becoming a reality. Hopefully if scientists are able to locate specific abnormalities and link them to diseases or disorders, they will be able to effectively use gene editing to dramatically raise the rate of healthy births.
The summary provides a clear and concise overview of the article, highlighting the key points about the reexamination of the link between gene mutations and inheritable diseases. The author also provides a thoughtful reflection on the implications of the research, considering both the potential benefits and risks of genetic research and gene-editing technologies. The reflection raises important questions about the limitations of current scientific understanding and the potential for future advances in genetics research to improve human health. Overall, the summary and reflection provide a balanced and insightful analysis of the article.

Curling is a team sport that is popular in many countries around the world, including Canada, Germany, England, and Sweden. This sport involves two teams taking turns guiding a heavy stone ball, or “rock,” across an indoor ice field. Curling was first played in Scotland in the sixteenth century, and early matches were played on frozen rivers or lakes. Today, Scotland still holds many curling events, and it is the home of the World Curling Federation, which oversees the game's regulations.
A curling match is played between two teams with four players each. Two members of the team, called sweepers, slide down the ice and guide the rocks down the ice with brooms. Each team has eight rocks, and team members take turns "sweeping" the rocks towards the rings on each side of the ice field. When all of the rocks have been played, each team's score is calculated and the winner is announced. A curling team wins when they have the highest number of rocks inside their team’s ring. Curling became an Olympic sport in 1998 and is gaining popularity in many countries, including the United States. .Which of the following would be most helpful for scoring points in curling?

being able to carry the rock across the ice
B.
being able to run quickly across the ice
C.
being able to take the other team's rock
D.
