"There was a blurred line. It seemed to be something running. It looked to be a girl. Her hair was flowing behind her perfectly as she sprinted. It started to rain, which seemed to make it harder for her to keep running. It did however make it easier for her to lose whatever was following her. Next thing, there is a honk. A car. A car was chasing her. But why? It seems she has stolen something. A necklace perhaps. There is a museum a block away. All of a sudden, there is laughter. The girl is giggling and laughing at the fun she is having. Adrenaline rushes through her veins. She cannot believe something like this hadn't happened before. She eventually lost the car because of the rain. She jumped around screaming for joy and laughed when she realized, she had won!"

"Who are you?" A voice came from behind her. The girl jumped but didn't turn around.

"I thought I got rid of him?" She whispered.

"Who?" The voice came again. The girl started running. She didn't look back.

There was only that blurry line that was running.

She ran towards the museum. It was really quite. The rain had died down a lot. Just like the car did. There was little to no noise to be heard. The only thing that was heard was the wind blowing gusts of cold air through her hair. The next thing I heard was a car door open and a fist pushing the back of her head.

A blur came around but it wasn't the girl. It was a man. He had black hair and tan skin, and was wearing a button up shirt and a black suit. He was going to tackle her to the cement, but she jumped and moved like lightning. Looking back, I saw a gun in his jacket pocket and a knife at his waist.

She was rolling through the air towards the museum steps. The girl landed, covering her head quickly. She heard him walk up the stairs after her.

"The necklace is upstairs isn't it." He said. She stopped and looked back.

"Get it then." she said stepping away.

"No way."

"Your going to get it." He said again. She ran up the stairs and almost tripped again, just missing the step. There was no doubt that she had that adrenaline rush.

She ran up the last steps and looked around. Another car honked and the car came to a halt. This was the tattooed man from the alley. The same guy had come back.

He was chasing her. The boy and the girl were both standing in front of the museum. The girl looked back briefly and then turned. In a swift motion, she was on the balcony looking down. She grabbed the banister and pulled herself up and over the ledge. The fall was about six feet, nothing too bad.

"That's right." He said to himself, picking up the pace. The girl was stuck. Her hands grabbing at the metal.

Explanation: This is what Gladwell calls a tipping point. As the name of the book implies, tipping points are Gladwell's focus. If we accept his premise that social phenomena act as epidemics, then studying when the tipping point in the epidemic occurs seems to be the most illustrative way to understand the epidemic. which fact would be most relevant to your argument?

a) president roosevelt was reviled by many wealthy citizens because of his advocacy for greater action for the state.
b) roosevelt's wife, eleanor, made the role of being america's first lady more than just an ornamental role.
c) roosevelt is the only person to run for president of the united state four times and win each time.
d) roosevelt purchased land in georgia near some hot springs that he used for therapy for his polio.

Answers

The most relevant fact to the argument about President Franklin Delano Roosevelt changing America's perception of the disease of polio would be:

d) Roosevelt purchased land in Georgia near some hot springs that he used for therapy for his polio.

This fact is significant because it highlights Roosevelt's personal experience with polio and his proactive approach to finding a treatment. By purchasing the land and utilizing the hot springs for therapy, Roosevelt demonstrated his determination to overcome the disease and regain his physical strength.

This action not only showcased Roosevelt's resilience but also brought attention to the effectiveness of hydrotherapy in treating polio. It helped challenge the prevailing notion that polio was a debilitating and incurable disease, creating a sense of hope and possibility for other polio patients.

Roosevelt's personal journey with polio and his pursuit of innovative treatments played a pivotal role in changing America's perception of the disease. It humanized the condition and shed light on the struggles faced by individuals with polio, leading to increased awareness, research, and public support for finding a cure.

This is an excerpt from- Sexual selection and special design authored by Steven W Gangestad, in the Annals New York academy of Science. Answer the questions based on the excerpt provided below. "…..Women claim men’s scent importantly affects their attraction to them. Moreover, evidence suggests that women’s olfaction changes across menstrual cycle. For instance, women tend to rate androstenone, a steroid found in men’s sweat, more positively near ovulation than during non-fertile phases.
In an initial study, we asked 41 men to wear T-shirt for two consecutive nights. During the two-day period, they were to wash only with unscented soap, not to wear any fragrances or colognes, not eat certain strong foods, and not to sleep with another person. They dropped shirts off at our lab on a designated morning. Later that same morning and throughout the next day, women came in, smelled each T-shirt and rated its attractiveness (a composite of two ratings: pleasantness and sexiness). For each woman, we regressed her rating on men’s symmetry to yield "a preference for symmetry" score (the regression slope, a measure of the change in rating as a function of a change in symmetry). We then examined the correlation of these preference scores with women’s estimated fertility based on their self-reported day of the cycle and actuarial data on probability of conception for each day. Across 28 normally ovulating women the correlation was 0.54, p<0.001. Examination of the bivariate plot revealed that when women’s fertility was near zero (very early and late in the cycle), they had no systematic preference for the scent of either symmetrical or asymmetrical men. As their fertility increased, however, they increasingly preferred the scent of symmetrical men.
A subsequent study replicated and extended that result in a larger sample of about 50 normally ovulating women and 80 men. Women’s preference for symmetry correlated 0.42 with their fertility based on the day of their cycle, p<0.001. We asked men how many times they showered and whether they wore any fragrances. The number of times men showered predicted the attractiveness of their scent. When this variable was partialled out and all men who wore fragrances were eliminated from the analysis, the correlation between women’s symmetry and their fertility actually increased, r=0.48, p<0.001. In a third study in our lab, this result was once again replicated, r=0.26, p<0.05. When data from all three studies were pooled, the correlation between women’s preference for symmetry and the fertile phase of their cycle was r=0.40, p<0.0001." [Note: p values reported here means that correlation r is statistically significant]
From this scenario, the immune systems of humans should be exceptionally high. Yet, there is a rising incidence of autoimmune diseases and lack thereof immunity. What form of selection do you think is at play here? Explain.

Answers

Autoimmune diseases are rising despite the fact that humans should have exceptionally high immune systems. This can be explained by the fact that sexual selection is at play, leading to a reduction in immune function.

The excerpt explains the correlation between women's preference for symmetry and their fertile phase of their cycle. It is observed that women tend to prefer the scent of symmetrical men as their fertility increases. This indicates that women use scent as a factor in determining mating partners, which is an example of sexual selection.Sexual selection is a special type of natural selection in which individuals with certain traits are more likely than others to obtain mates.

This leads to traits that improve an individual's ability to secure a mate being favored, while traits that do not aid in mate selection are not favored. As a result, it is suggested that sexual selection may have favored traits that lower immune function in order to signal traits related to mate quality. This could explain the rising incidence of autoimmune diseases despite the fact that humans should have exceptionally high immune systems.

At the start of Book II, Satan sits on his throne like a Middle Eastern potentate and addresses the assembled devils as to the course of action they should follow. Four of the devils speak — Moloch, Belial, Mammon, and Beelzebub — with Beelzebub being Satan's mouthpiece. Each speaker offers a different attitude concerning a solution for their Hellish predicament: Moloch proposes open warfare on Heaven; Belial proposes that they do nothing; Mammon argues that Hell may not be so bad, that it can be livable, even comfortable, if all the devils will work to improve it; and Beelzebub, Satan's mouthpiece, argues that the only way to secure revenge on Heaven is to corrupt God's newest creation: Man.

Beelzebub's (Satan's) plan carries the day, and Satan begins his journey up from Hell. At Hell's Gate, he is confronted by his daughter, Sin, a being whose upper torso is that of a beautiful woman but whose lower body is serpent-like. All around her waist are hellish, barking dogs. Across from Sin is her phantom-like son, Death.

Write an argument for or against the idea of using controlled fires to protect wild areas . rough draft and final draft need helppp !!

Answers

Using controlled fires to protect wild areas can be a highly effective and beneficial practice. Controlled fires, also known as prescribed burns, have several advantages. Firstly, they can help reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfires by removing excessive vegetation that could fuel the flames.

Secondly, prescribed burns can promote the growth of native plant species by eliminating invasive plants and allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor. This helps maintain biodiversity and restore natural habitats. Additionally, controlled fires can mimic the natural fire cycle, which certain ecosystems require for their regeneration and rejuvenation.

However, there are also valid arguments against using controlled fires. Critics argue that these fires can be unpredictable and may get out of control, posing a risk to nearby communities and property. There is also concern that the smoke and pollutants released during controlled burns could have negative health effects. Moreover, some argue that prescribed burns can disrupt wildlife habitats and may not be appropriate in all ecosystems.

In conclusion, the use of controlled fires to protect wild areas can be a valuable tool if implemented carefully and responsibly. While there are potential risks and drawbacks, when conducted with proper planning and expertise, prescribed burns can contribute to the overall health and resilience of ecosystems, reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires and promoting biodiversity.
