Read this excerpt from Thomas Paine's famous essay "The Crisis Number One":

I have as little superstition in me as any man living, but my secret opinion has ever been, and still is, that God Almighty will not give up a people to military destruction, or leave them unsupportedly to perish, who have so earnestly and so repeatedly sought to avoid the calamities of war, by every decent method which wisdom could invent. Neither have I so much of the infidel in me, as to suppose that He has relinquished the government of the world, and given us up to the care of devils; and as I do not, I cannot see on what grounds the king of Britain can look up to heaven for help against us: a common murderer, a highwayman, or a house-breaker, has as good a pretence as he.

Which sentence best describes Paine's claim in the excerpt?

A.) God would not take sides between the British and the American colonists.
B.) It was necessary to save Americans because God did not support military destruction.
C.) It was necessary for America to fight the British to defend their religious values.

henry wadsworth longfellow wrote modern poems in free verse.(True/False)

Answers

The given statement, henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote modern poems in free verse is True. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was one of the most important figures of the American poetry canon in the nineteenth century.

He wrote poetry in traditional forms like the sonnet and the ballad, but he also wrote in more modern poetic forms. Longfellow wrote some of the earliest modern poems in free verse, which is a form based on speech-like rhythms rather than the formal rhyme and meter of traditional poems. Free verse has a loose form and is often based on the poet's individual experience or on stories from a particular culture.

This form was quickly adopted by many of Longfellow’s contemporaries at the time, including William Cullen Bryant and Theodore Worcester. Longfellow's free verse poems had an incisive depth and subtlety of feeling that demonstrated that free verse could be just as effective and emotive as traditional forms. His free verse poetry eventually earned him recognition as one of the nineteenth century's most important poets.

A

B

C

D

Answers

Answer:

dust

Explanation:

The speaker does not compare herself to temperature.

The poem "Still I Rise" was written by Maya Angelou, an African American poet, and civil activist. Her literary works mostly focus on the issues of racism and discrimination faced by the African people.

In the short poem "Still I Rise", Angelou talks of how she continues to "rise" despite the wishes and expectations of people. She compares herself to numerous things, ranging from dust to air to hope, signifying her persistence and resilience, self independence. She also boldly declares her independent spirit, vehemently addressing those who may have wronged her. But despite the 'negative' things that they want, she courageously declared her intention of rising above all else, ending the poem with a resounding "I rise/ I rise/ I rise."

Maya Angelou's poem is a bold statement and declaration of her growing and rising spirit that cannot be broken or even damaged. And through various imagery, she compares herself to the dust rising, the air, the hopes, etc. But out of the given options, she does not compare herself to the temperature. Based on the passage, the reader can infer that some Haida families lived in homes that

Answers

Based on the passage from "The Raven and the First Men: The Beginnings of the Haida," we can infer that some Haida families lived in homes that had smoke holes in the ceiling.

This can be deduced from the description of Raven as a baby playing with a small box in the chief's dwelling. When Raven tumbled and tossed the box until it fell open, the stars inside flew up through the smoke hole in the ceiling and settled in the night sky.

The presence of a smoke hole suggests that the chief's dwelling was designed to have a central hearth or fire pit where smoke would rise. The smoke hole in the ceiling allowed the smoke to escape, preventing it from filling the living space.

This architectural feature was common in many traditional indigenous dwellings around the world, including those of the Haida people.

The mention of the chief's dwelling specifically highlights the importance of the chief within the Haida community. The fact that the chief's daughter adopted Raven, unaware of his true identity, indicates the level of trust and reverence given to the chief's family.

The ability of the chief to recover from the incident without much distress over the loss of the stars suggests a sense of resilience and adaptability within the Haida culture.

Robots on Earth
by Jerry West
Explosions. Car chases. A man and woman, drenched in sweat, limping from a building as it crumbles to the ground, muster the last of their strength to rescue humanity from its inevitable extinction at the cold, metal hands of humanoid creatures with artificial intelligence gone awry. For decades, books and movies have dictated how we think of robots. Simply the word "robot" can bring to mind images of evil, mechanical creatures bent on taking over the world and wiping out every glimmer of humanity. And yet, the truth of machines is dramatically different. Today's robots hold little in common with their villainous cousins from action-packed science fiction. Most robots have no interest in harming the human population at all; they exist to aid people in making life safer, healthier, and more productive.
For example, jobs such as welding and painting are important to civilization as we know it, but experience has taught us that these activities can be hazardous to human health. In addition, fumes in automobile and airplane factories can harm organic bodies that become exposed to their toxins in the assembly process. Even when the best precautions are taken, workers may still suffer from a lack of adequate ventilation. What is the answer to these problematic dilemmas? Robots. Because machines don't rely on clean air or comfortable temperatures, because they can function even in the midst of deadly gasses, they can take over easily where humans would suffer greatly. Working together, humans and robots can get the job done.
A robot's job isn't limited to the terrestrial level, either. Even in space, machines such as the R2 humanoid robot at the International Space Station complete dangerous tasks for astronauts, protecting them from potentially deadly situations. And then, when there are mundane but essential tasks to conduct on the space station, R2 takes care of those, as well, freeing up the astronauts' time for more important responsibilities. Thus, robots manage to create healthier, happier humans in space and on Earth.
In fact, there are robots on Earth that exist specifically to boost human health. Just as contact lenses enhance human sight, robotics can increase human mobility. People with disabilities and various forms of paralysis now have hope that they can achieve a better range of motion, when before this wasn't possible. With the help of robots, scientists are working to create an exoskeleton that will attach itself to the outside of the human body, establishing a connection to the human brain. Neuroscientist Miguel Nicolelis has a dream. "We are working with the Brazilian government, which is helping fund the project. At the 2014 soccer World Cup celebrations, we hope to have a Brazilian teenager with quadriplegia walk out and make the opening kick."
Explosions and car crashes may sell tickets for the summer blockbuster, but robots have so much more to offer, and much of it is a positive service to humans. At the heart of the field of robotics is not the creation of people-destroying machines with evil artificial intelligence, but something much more useful. Robots aren't our enemies; instead, they are the valuable result of scientific endeavors to create safer lives for people everywhere.

Answers

According to the instructions, we can create a summary of this text on robots by putting one main idea sentence at the beginning of each paragraph.

In contrast to the portrayal of robots in literature and film, the majority of robots are used to save and enhance human lives. Robots, for instance, are the answer discovered to prevent people from getting hurt or ill while performing risky professions.

Even in space, robots like the R2 carry out duties that astronauts could find unsafe or time-consuming. Robots can also be affixed to our bodies to assist those who are paralyzed or disabled in moving.

In conclusion, robots are not our adversaries; rather, they work to make human existence safer.
