They can speak English, and instead of using their original names, they use similar, more American-sounding names or nicknames. Yet, they are still connected to their original culture. As they wait outside a church for their grandmother, Micaela notices the way a couple is dressed. She judges them according to the values taught to her by her Mexican family. Even though she and her brothers can already see themselves as "Mericans", they are in fact connected to more than just culture. When the lady speaks Spanish, the situation becomes even more ironic. The lady is judging them on their appearance, not knowing they can speak English, not seeing they are multicultural children.
