First Passage: The Northern Red Oak


The northern red oak is a grand-looking tree. It can grow as high as 75 feet tall. The fall season brings shorter days and cooler temperatures. Fall also brings changes to the leaves of the northern red oak. Leaves turn from green to shades of yellow, orange, and red, which is an amazing sight. It makes the northern red oak an eye-catching stand out among other trees in the oak family.


In summer, the gray rough branches of the northern red oak grow long and wide. This is the season when branches can become overly long and heavy. The weight of the branches' leaves adds even more pounds. If the growth of the tree is not managed, the entire appearance of the tree can be changed. Early trimming helps groom the tree and keeps it from looking like a rounded triangle by summer's end.


Both the size and the shape of the northern red oak's leaves are especially interesting. It is easy to find leaves that are larger than a man's hand. They often have 8 or more pointed fingers. That makes northern red oak leaves look like large, flattened evergreen trees.

The live oak tree is one of the toughest trees found in the United States. It is not a tall tree. It grows only 30 to 40 feet high. But its branches are broad and strong. The branches make up for the tree's rather short height. How? The branches stretch out from the trunk like thick arms on a giant. The leaves on the branches are simple. They are oval in shape. They glisten in the sun. Most importantly, live oak leaves are always there. Live oaks stay green all year round.


The live oak is also a fast growing tree. It is often planted in the lawns of new houses. This lets people living in the house have shade in just a few years. However, the owner of the tree needs to keep the lower branches trimmed. If the lower branches are not trimmed, over time the lower tree limbs will grow downward toward the ground. These branches will seem to almost slither like a snake. In time, they will be only inches above the ground. They will also spread out over the lawn for up to 25 feet from the trunk of the tree.


The live oak tree is popular for a very important reason. It can live in very hot weather. Strong sunlight does not kill it. People in the southern United States see so many live oaks that they no longer really notice them. Live oak trees just blend into the landscape. Science has given humans many amazing devices and useful bits of knowledge. We know so much about our bodies and how to stay healthy, for example. We also know how to make machines and devices that make life easy for us. Scientists dedicate their lives to knowledge, but even with a lifetime commitment, sometimes scientists fail to find all the answers. One mystery that still remains unsolved is why we yawn—what makes us yawn and what purpose it serves.


Recent studies suggest that we yawn when we get tired as a way to encourage our brains. The theory is that yawning helps cool the brain, allowing it to work more efficiently. According to WebMD's article about these studies, when you yawn, your jaw muscles get stretched, increasing blood flow to your neck, face, and head. Also a deep breath during the yawn forces spinal fluid and blood down from the brain. The cool air then cools down these fluids.


Other scientists believe, however, that yawning is a form of communication. This theory attempts to explain why yawning seems to spread from person to person. This kind of behavior is called "contagious yawning" and carries with it a possible social message. BOSTON, Massachusetts. A recent study revealed that one in five teenagers has at least some hearing loss. The rate of hearing loss among young people has grown significantly since about 1990. Now, experts are urging kids to turn down the volume on their digital music players. These experts suggest that listening to loud music through earbuds may be responsible for the increase.

For the study, researchers compared data from two nationwide health surveys of hearing loss in 12- to 19-year-olds. The first study was done between 1988 and 1994. The second was done between 2005 and 2006. In the first study, about 15 percent of teens were found to have at least some hearing loss. In the more recent study, 19.5 percent of teens had at least some hearing loss. This means that about 6.5 million young people have at least some difficulty hearing.

Most of the hearing loss in the teens was "slight." Researchers defined "slight" as an inability to hear at 16 to 24 decibels. A teen with slight hearing loss might not be able to hear sounds such as leaves rustling or someone whispering. Dr. Gary Curhan was the study's senior author. According to Curhan, people with slight hearing loss can hear vowel sounds clearly. However, they might miss sounds from some consonants, such as t, k, and s. Experts warn that this minor loss of hearing is sufficient to cause problems in school. It also sets the stage for hearing aids later in life.

"Although speech will be detectable, it might not be fully intelligible," Curhan said. Researchers lack final evidence that listening to iPods and other music devices is to blame for hearing loss in teens. However, researchers did note a significant increase in high-frequency hearing loss. This particular type of hearing loss, researchers said, indicates that noise may be to blame. Researchers cited a 2010 Australian study. The study linked the use of personal listening devices with a 70 percent increased risk of hearing loss in young people.

"I think the evidence is out there that prolonged exposure to loud noise is likely to be harmful to hearing, but that doesn't mean kids can't listen to MP3 players," Curhan said. "Our hope is we can encourage people to be careful."

Loud music isn't anything new, of course. Each recent generation of teens has found a new technology to blast music. Teens listened to bulky headphones in the 1960s and used the handheld Sony Walkmans in the 1980s. Today's teens, however, spend more time than ever listening to music. In fact, according to audiologist Brian Fligor, young people spend more than twice as much time listening to music than previous generations.

One of Fligor's patients is 17-year-old Matthew Brady of Foxborough, Massachusetts. Matthew has a mild hearing loss. He has trouble hearing his friends in the school cafeteria. He has admitted to occasionally faking comprehension. Matthew used to listen to an iPod turned up too loud and for too long. Fligor believes this caused Matthew's muffled hearing.

Matthew used to crank up the volume on his favorites—Daughtry, Bon Jovi, and U2—while walking on a treadmill. He did this at least four days a week for 30-minute stretches at a time. One day last summer, he got off the treadmill and couldn't hear anything with his left ear. His hearing gradually returned, but it was never the same.

Matthew's fondness for listening to loud music in not uncommon. During a study of college students, Fligor found that more than half of those tested listened to music at 85 decibels or louder. That's about as loud as a hair dryer or a vacuum cleaner. According to Fligor, regular listening at those levels can turn microscopic hair cells in the inner ear into scar tissue. Fligor believes that some people, such as Matthew, may be more likely to experience damage than others.

These days, Matthew still listens to his digital music player. But now he listens at lower volumes.

"Do not [blast] your iPod," Matthew cautions other teens. "It's only going to hurt your hearing. I learned this the hard way."
