One must first analyze Job's current circumstances before evaluating his friend's suggestion. His friends did little to nothing to lessen his suffering because he had lost all of his sons, his fortune, his health, and presumably the respect of everyone around him.
For instance, in an effort to console him, Bildad claimed that if Job's son had died, it was because those responsible were sinners or terrible people who deserved to perish. Eliphaz made a suggestion that Job was not a decent man and that God, who does not regard the good deeds of his followers, was punishing him.
When one reads their entire discourse, they demonstrate not only a failure to lessen Job's suffering but actually an increase in it. Job had a strong belief in a god. If they accomplished anything at all, it was to prevent Job from feeling sorry for himself. Elihu, the final of his buddies, intervened, and he assisted him in seeing the wider picture. And how, despite his imperfections yet capacity for error, he might nevertheless be a good guy and experience misery.
A better strategy may have been starting out with sympathies, expressing sincere sorrow for his loss, assisting him in realizing that his sons were not at fault, and encouraging him to believe that god could still be there for him.
